Gabriel Vazquez is the Director of Orchestras at Somerset Academy Brooks. Mr. Vazquez has experience teaching music and foreign languages from kindergarten through 12th grade in various schools throughout Austin and San Antonio and has a passion for making music education accessible to all students from all backgrounds.
Mr. Vazquez is a graduate of Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Music with an emphasis in cello performance and a Bachelor of Arts in German. While at Texas State, Mr. Vazquez was a cello teacher with the Texas State String Project, performed with the Texas State Symphony Orchestra, Texas State University Opera, participated in research projects for music literacy in beginner string students, tutored German in the modern languages department, and studied abroad in Austria to supplement his proficiency in German.
Professionally, Mr. Vazquez has performed with Alamo City Arts Symphony Viva, Sonido Barroco, The Vienna Light Orchestra, various quartets, The Archive Theater, and as a soloist in many different venues across Texas and in Central Europe. He also enjoys performing outside the world of classical music on electric cello with various local rock, indie, and alternative bands and artists in San Antonio. In his free time, Mr. Vazquez enjoys visiting family, exploring new restaurants with friends, reading, and kayaking.
The Bengal Orchestra:
The orchestra program at Somerset Academy Brooks provides students from 6th through 12th grade the opportunity to learn and become proficient in playing the violin, viola, cello, or double bass.
In orchestra, students will learn the fundamentals of music theory, music literacy, the basics of playing a string instrument, and grow as musicians as they advance in their skills while performing in an orchestral setting with their friends. As they learn, the students will be exposed to all kinds of music as we play and perform everything from the western classical music of Mozart, Bach, and Vivaldi to folk music from around the world to the modern music of Caroline Shaw and new composers, cover some of their favorite songs from their favorite genres and artist and experiment on the endless possibilities of their instruments.
The orchestra program will not only help them grow as musicians, but also as individuals as they learn discipline, patience, responsibility, accountability, how to work with others, and find a community with their fellow orchestra members as they learn and perform together!
